Get Ready for Back to School

Get ready for Back to School!

As the new school year approaches, parents are busy deciding whether to send their children to school for in-person instruction, receive virtual instruction at home, or a blend of the two.  There are no right or wrong answers, so each family must make the decision that works best for their situation and child.

Whatever you choose, here are some tips to ensure a smooth transition back to school.

Routines

Routines develop good habits and ensure productive days. Start to ease your children back to a regular bedtime and keep that bedtime during the school year.  Get up at the same time each day and have breakfast, get dressed, wash up and be ready for the first bell, whether at school or online.

Supplies

Nothing says back to school like brand new crayons and fresh markers. Prepare for the year by shopping for new school supplies and even a few new outfits. (Virtual students will be more inclined to get dressed for school!)

Space

Designate a special space at home for school, a desk or table with supplies, a clock, calendar and inspirational posters.  A google search can help you find posters that encourage a growth mindset.

Communication

Read and play games to get your child in the habit of sitting still for extended periods of time. Have conversations about the school year-what is your child looking forward to? What are they worried about? And don’t forget, the first day is special no matter where it happens-take a first day of school picture! Say, “Cheese!”
